Don’t Have Hollow Doors
If exterior doors have a hollow-core, replace them with solid wood, fiberglass, or steel.
Make sure exterior door hinges are on the inside rather than the outside, where an intruder can remove the pins and pull the door out of the frame.
Plant prickly Bushes
When most burglars are selecting a target, they are looking for an easy way in; keep them away from your windows by planting prickly bushes directly outside the window frame. That will make thieves think twice about trying to break-in.
Vacation Tips
Turn on Some Lights
Use timers to turn lights, televisions, and sound systems on and off at different times to give your home a "lived-in look" when you are away. Install motion-detecting outdoor floodlights around your home. Remember to mount them high enough to prevent intruders from disabling them.
Keep a Key with Someone You Can Trust
Thieves always look in mailboxes, under doormats and above doorways for keys. Do not make it easy for them to get into your home. If you like to keep a spare key available in case of an emergency, try leaving the key with someone you can trust. That way you know that it is always stowed in a safe place, not under a doormat where it can be found easily.
Turn Down Your Phone
Make sure the volume is turned off or down on your telephone and answering machine, so it can’t be heard by outsiders. That way thieves cannot use that to check if you are home or not.
